How to Extend the Life of Your Light Bulbs

Sep 29, 2022

Are your light bulbs always failing prematurely? You may be doing something wrong. According to Lighting Access, LED light bulbs should generally last about 11,000 hours. It's important to know the proper care so that when you get your lights from an LED light distributor, you know how to extend their life. If you find yourself having to replace light bulbs now and then, here are some things you can do.

Don't Move Your Light Bulbs

Lights, especially incandescent ones, can get really hot. They have filaments made of metal, and when these get hot they get really brittle. The more you handle a hot light bulb, the higher the risk that the filament might snap. This doesn't just apply to handling; it also applies to where you place your light bulbs. If you install your light bulbs in a place with lots of movement, for instance, near a ceiling fan or close to a door, you'll be drastically shortening their lifespan. Keep in mind that, as you might have already realized, this generally applies to light bulbs with filaments.

Don't Turn Your Lights On and Off Frequently

Everyone knows that leaving light bulbs on uses a lot of energy. However, it's also true that frequently turning your lights on and off can negatively impact their lifespan. To avoid frequently switching them on and off, you may need to install a timed light switch. That way, it switches the lights on once a day and off when you don't need to light them. That will go a long way in increasing the lifespan of your light bulbs.

Operate Your Bulbs at Low Power

This is one of the best ways to boost the longevity of your light bulbs. Less power translates to less heat. When bulbs are not as hot, there is less stress on the filament. A good way to apply this principle would be to use a dimmer switch. This essentially helps you lower the voltage delivered to the bulb. Using dimmer switches has advantages for bulbs with filaments and those that use fluorescent technology as well. It's important to note that, instead of lowering the stress on the filament, using a dimmer switch on a fluorescent light means a much lower starting voltage and heat to the lamp.

The general goal behind extending the life of your light bulbs is to save money. A great idea would be to switch to lights that have a longer lifespan naturally. If you have any questions or are looking for an LED light distributor, get in contact with Polestar Distributors today.
